Why You Should Talk to Strangers
“When you talk to strangers, you’re making beautiful interruptions into the expected narrative of your daily life – and theirs,” says Kio Stark, author of “When Strangers Meet.”
In this TED Talks video, Stark challenges the notion that we need to stay away from strangers. Stranger Danger! When you dismiss every “stranger” you walk by, what are you possibly losing out on?
According to Stark, there are two huge benefits to using our senses, instead of our fears, when it comes to talking to strangers.
1. It liberates us: when we categorize people based on quick assumptions, it is a road to bias. We are not thinking about people as individuals. Breaking away from this can lead to eye-opening and meaningful moments.
2. Intimacy: this may sound counter-intuitive, but talking to strangers can lead to fleeting intimacy: a quick, good feeling. For example, think about meeting your neighbor; you gain an immediate sense of community.
